We are so pleased that there was a lengthy article about our keynote speaker Yeonmi Park in this weekends (04/10/14) Saturday Telegraph Magazine. What a heartbreaking and powerful story. We can’t wait to meet her and hear her tell it. Don’t forget that we will be live streaming the event directly from our website so you can tune in to hear it live.

I hope all of you have now settled back into the new term. We have just started visiting schools for the assemblies to tell all the students about our line up. We will be loading the full line up this week. If you would like to apply for a ticket independently of the schools do get in touch – there are only very few available.
In the Guardian on Tuesday 26 August 2014 our opening speaker Yeonmi Park talks about the huge effect that watching foreign films had on her when she was growing up in North Korea. It was life-changing. Her story is extra-ordinary and she will be telling you all about it on November 5th.

Doing the round of the schools and colleges in Bath we meet many budding entrepreneurs. Developing entrepreneurial skills is proving to be invaluable given the way the workplace is developing. We therefore couldn’t be more thrilled to have Sahar Hashemi OBE talking at our TEDx. Sahar founded Coffee Republic in 1995 and brought the coffee bar concept to the UK. She built it into one of the UK’s most recognised high street brands with 110 bars and a turnover of £30m.
In 2011 Sahar was nominated by Director magazine as one of its Top 10 Original Thinkers, alongside Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Sir Jonathan Ive. In the same year she was invited to join the Entrepreneurs Forum set up by UK Business Secretary Vince Cable to give informal personal advice to the government on enterprise policies.
Here’s what she says about how she got going:
When I started my working life, as a lawyer, I believed creativity was for special people like Richard Branson. I left the law after 5 years, disillusioned that what I did didn’t suit my personality. On a trip to New York I fell in love (as a customer) with the then-new style coffee bar concepts. I was encouraged by my brother Bobby to bring the concept to the UK – and thus by accident became an entrepreneur.

We couldn’t be more proud to announce our first speaker: the very wonderful Iby Knill. Iby is the author of The Women Without a Number . For sixty years Iby kept secret the fact that she was an Auschwitz survivor; her story is extraordinary. At 90 years old Iby is the oldest speaker that we have invited to the TEDx and full of wisdom. Entirely independently, AgeUK Bath contacted us because they would like to encourage engagement between the ages and we have given them 20 seats in the balcony to come and join us. We will also be running a one-to-one Digital Learning session during Bath Digital Festival, which will offer one-to-one teaching with our students and AgeUK.
